Maybe if Transformers does well at the box office this summer, Michael Bay will make a live action G.I. Joe movie. Who would Jon Voight play?
How did George Lucas not have any money after Star Wars? Doesn’t he get most of the royalties from the Star Wars license? I realized that Howard the Duck was one of the worst bombs of all time, but according to wikipedia, it only cost 30 million to make. The Star Wars toys should be able to account for that. Did he have a river lined with 24k gold running through his house like MC Hammer?
Dennis, money can go to your head, and with Lucas, he went overboard. He definitely made a large amount of money on Star Wars. That said, he sent a ridiculous amount of money on the Lucas Films/Skywalker Sound complex, which rather than simply buying or leasing a building, he decided to purchase a massive ranch in Orange County, CA. He also got divorced in 1983. I agree that’s ridiculous to be in debt, after releasing 3 Star Wars and 2 Indiana Jones films.
Like Greg wrote, George Lucas was going through a divorce. I don’t know if he was living there at the time, but in California, assets get split evenly between the husband and wife, so he might have been forced to give his wife half of his Star Wars money. In addition, Star Wars toys weren’t quite as popular in 1986 as they were a few years earlier so slightly less money was coming in. On top of that, Howard the Duck resulted in a $20 million loss and, of course, Lucas was spending tons of money setting up various computer special effects studios.
Twenty years later…
In 2006, Forbes magazine estimated Lucas’s personal wealth at $3.5 billion.
I forgot about the divorce. Oh well, he’ll make another billion after the new Indy
film. I read an article that says pretty much anything that can be licensed from
the movie will be.
You guys should check this youtube video. It’s the “best scenes” from the Nicholas
Cage movie “The Wicker Man”. Nicholas Cage in a bear suit performing karate on
girls. Need I say more.
I just watched the video. The best part is when Nicholas Cage’s head is covered with bees and he keeps screaming, “Not the bees!” Why does Nicholas Cage beat up so many women and little girls in this movie?
‘teen wolf’ companion film ‘teen witch’ (1989) is available on netflix. er… just saying.
