Congratulations on staying motivated enough to reach 150 episodes! It’s inspiring to hear you guys still very much into it. I don’t remember a single show that sounded phoned in or done just for the sake of doing a show. I think some podcasters feel so much pressure to put something out that they podcast for the sake of podcasting and the enthusiasm isn’t there an it isn’t fun to listen to. But that has never been the case with TPSS, at least since I started listening a little while ago.
This one’s a bit of a monster and I’m only halfway through. That intro sounded really good. The sound effects were especially great.
It’s funny-most people would love to be one-on-one with an interesting celebrity with lots of stuff to talk about and then the opportunity arises with Jesse Ventura and it ends up an experience beyond my wildest nightmares. I can’t believe anyone survived being in the back of that line. You wait forever and then you’re rewarded/punished with half an hour of brutal Jesse Ventura interactions. It sounds like it was a Jesse Ventura fan’s idea of heaven, but it was probably Jesse Ventura fan hell. I would rather he punched me in the face once I got to the table instead of having to hear him drone on about Abraham Lincoln conspiracies nobody cares about.
Well I gotta check out the next half. I can’t wait to hear about Hot Tub Time Machine. I hear it happens in 1985!
Esteban, thanks for your encouragement! A big reason Greg and I still sound like we’re having fun after all these episodes is because we really are! Plus, we’re not putting on a show when we sit in front of the microphones. Well, we are to a certain extent, but we’re mainly just recording ourselves having a typical conversation about pop culture with each other. When we talk and hang out off the air, our discussions are usually similar to what you hear in the show…video games, movies, TV shows, celebrities, and complaining about George Lucas. Sometimes, I worry that we’ll run out of stuff to talk about, but that never happens!
I’d love to go back to the way we started and post a new episode every week, but I haven’t had time. That’s why we try to make up for it with longer episodes. Instead of a 24 minute episode every week, we’ve been posting a 40 minute episode every two weeks or, in this case, an 85 minute episode after four weeks. I hope you and our other listeners don’t mind.
I really liked Hot Tub Time Machine. It was funny and silly – my kind of movie – but it was also a good movie, too. It actually felt like a good, classic 80s comedy. I’d see it again.
I agree with you about meeting Jesse Ventura and other celebrities. I used to get so excited at the chance of meeting my favorite celebrities, but now I know I’ll end up being disappointed. How much of a connection could I possibly make with one of these people in 30 seconds, or in Greg’s case, an hour? Even if Ventura were my favorite celebrity of all time, and even if I got to talk to him one-on-one for two solid hours, I’m still not his friend, so what difference does it make? Nowadays, Greg and I go to these book signings and expos mainly just to get pictures with people. We really don’t expect much else to come out of it, though the quick interviews and sound clips are nice for the podcast, too.
Greg probably could’ve done an interview with Ventura for the show, but like we said in this episode, and like you pointed out in your comment, he would’ve just droned on and on about a Lincoln conspiracy…interesting for a few minutes, but I’m sure most people would want to hear about his days in pro wrestling or on the set of Predator instead.
One celebrity who actually remembers us is Ed Begley Jr. He’s someone I would like to get on the show again. We’re hoping to make that happen at this year’s green expo.
Let us now what you think of the rest of the episode! By the way, are you doing a podcast now, too? If so, I’ll definitely listen!
I go to these celebrity meetups mainly for material for the show. It’s not all celebrities, primarily the nuts we talk about all the time. Though I will say, I paid less than $20 for a hard-cover book signed by Denis Leary and Ventura, and they were actually good books.
I liked the “jimmy cracked corn” you snuck in there while the song was fading out.
thanks for me spitting out my drink: ‘JIMMEH CRACK COOORN…. AND WE ARE THE WOOORLD’. and what’s jesse ventura’s left hand doing in the collage?
Ha ha! His back was all screwed up or something and he was bracing himself I think.
