greg – super envious of you meeting roger moore, he’s probably in my top 3 of favourite celebrities; a cornerstone of my childhood and he always seems to be very witty and friendly.
rob – the clip i sent you was from a sketch i recorded for a comedy podcast; i’m impersonating a BBC news reporter, which is SO far from my own accent! where do i start with british accents? there are that many counties that in turn are divided by class, income or even rivalries perpetuated by centuries-old industrial disputes. it is easy to label a person after hearing their accent, but it can be more complicated. for example, the beatles have scouse / liverpool accents; which have been definitely softened by international travel and living in london from a quite early age. however, even as billionaires, they still may be ‘looked down’ upon by a member of the middle classes or aristocracy because of their working class voices. if you heard some of my scouse mates, it would be akin to listening to boomhauer from ‘king of the hill’!
greg – you’re right about my accent – i have a strong accent even for my area. my accent is called broad, common or woolyback. my girlfriend – who is from a town only about 5 miles from where i’m from – mocks me about how indecipherable i sometimes am. i do find americans sometimes mistake accents from the north of england for irish, scottish or australian possibly because the majority of english accents in international media are from the south of the country and that is what you are accustomed to hearing. michael caine, alan rickman and hugh grant were all raised in london but have somewhat distinct accents gleaned from their education and class. michael caine has a cockney accent, alan rickman has a mild generic london accent that has been shaped with his shakespearean training. hugh grant i would just describe as sounding posh. ricky gervais has a home counties or middle england accent; his sidekick karl pilkington is from manchester and has a manc accent. your old friend AC/DC’s brian johnson has a north eastern / geordie accent.
‘skyfall’ was surprisingly good – especially the opening sequence. i think craig’s bond is still a bit too whiny, but i liked that this film restablished the bond family with M, moneypenny and Q – hopefully the next film will really get going with james bond in the 2010s.
great to hear a blast of ‘popozao’. it’s that bad, it’s good.
alright?
David, see I was right about your accent. There are of course many variations by geography in the United States. Heck Rob and I grew up on the same street and we don’t sound the same.
I too am a huge Roger Moore fan. I only wish I was at an event where he spoke for half an hour or something. He did a signing locally in NJ maybe 4 years ago for his last book, and I missed it, and I was pissed I did. Didn’t want to miss again.
Watch the video on this page, and you will see my walk by in the background, well my coat at least (51 sec top left). Then way in the back you can see my head walking to the back of the line (59 sec). I should have just stood there with those idiots and been on camera!

And I also really enjoyed Skyfall. The previous Bond film was atrocious. I liked to see them return those characters, and Ralph Fiennes is a great choice for M.
David, thanks for clarifying the variety of British accents. You’re our go-to UK correspondent!
